New lifts coming to Bridger

James Woodcock/Billings Gazette

Bridger Bowl ski area has announced plans to spend $4.1 million on two new lifts this summer, which will more than double the capacity on the northern end of the ski area.

The new lifts will replace the 46-year-old Alpine double-chair lift, which carried about 1,100 skiers an hour, while the new triple-chairs will increase [...]

On Big Mountain, DREAM is a reality

It was an inspiring day skiing with these three gentlemen, who have lower-leg paralysis as the result of traumatic accidents. That doesn’t hold them back, and last week we were fortunate to ride the slopes with them as they tried the “sit-ski” for the first time.

Every day in the winter, children and adults with disabilities [...]

Opening weekend delivers, and it’s still snowing.

Opening weekend at Whitefish Mountain Resort was a near-perfect combination of early-season powder and fast-moving lift lines – a real two-mitten drooler – and as the weekend draws nearer and we legions of working stiffs live vicariously through those fortunate few who are grinning through face shots on untouched powder lines, the word on the hill [...]

LitiJesus: Statue jars local atheists, lawsuit moves forward

The iconic Jesus statue on Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Big Mountain has tolerated more than its share of irreverent behavior through the years, but, until recently, it had never been sued.

But as Big Mountain enters its second day of a two-day second-round match against the hydra-headed monster of Nelson and Rossland, British Columbia, with a narrowing lead, it’s going to [...]

“Live from Missoula, it’s Blizzard Ball 2011!”

I realize it’s a stretch to refer to Blizzard Ball as a “snow sport,” but running is somewhat involved and it’s played outside, so I feel it loosely meets the definition of this blog.

Blizzard Ball 2011 is this weekend. It’s an opportunity for softball players in Missoula (and some from out of state) to get together [...]
