A crystal clear day on the summit of Big Mountain reveals spectacular views into Glacier National Park, its snow-white fortress of mountains rising like a parapet to the [...] It was an inspiring day skiing with these three gentlemen,who have lower-leg paralysis as the result of traumatic accidents. That doesn’t hold them back, and last week we were fortunate to ride the slopes with them as they tried the “sit-ski” for the first time. Every day in the winter, children and adults with disabilities [...] Opening weekend at Whitefish Mountain Resort was a near-perfect combination of early-season powder and fast-moving lift lines – a real two-mitten drooler – and as the weekend draws nearer and we legions of working stiffs live vicariously through those fortunate few who are grinning through face shots on untouched powder lines, the word on the hill [...] As the snow piles up on Big Mountain this week just in time for opening day, so too have the praise and accolades been heaped on Whitefish Mountain Resort with abandon, first by National Geographic Adventure, which named Whitefish one of the World’s 25 Best Ski Towns, and then by Trip Advisor, which ranked [...] The iconic Jesus statue on Whitefish Mountain Resort’s Big Mountain has tolerated more than its share of irreverent behavior through the years, but, until recently, it had never been sued. Jesus displayed admirable stoicism back when a handful of freestyle skiers and snowboarders started joking about “Grail Grinds” and “Jibs for Jesus,” which were all fun and [...] Whitefish Mountain Resort trounced Whistler in the first round of Powder magazine’s “Ski Town Throwdown” contest, besting the brute of British Columbia 1,730 to 1,005. But as Big Mountain enters its second day of a two-day second-round match against the hydra-headed monster of Nelson and Rossland, British Columbia, with a narrowing lead, it’s going to [...] With 30 inches of settled snow at Big Mountain’s summit stake and plenty of skiers making preseason turns on a sun-soaked Monday morning in Whitefish (check out those tracks in the image from the south summit webcam!), it would seem that Saturday night’s annual Pray for Snow party at the Bierstube was a success.
