On Big Mountain, DREAM is a reality

It was an inspiring day skiing with these three gentlemen, who have lower-leg paralysis as the result of traumatic accidents. That doesn’t hold them back, and last week we were fortunate to ride the slopes with them as they tried the “sit-ski” for the first time.

Every day in the winter, children and adults with disabilities [...]

Helmet cam raw footage: Skier takes horrific tumble off cliff

This guy, Stephen Ager, is lucky to be alive. What’s more amazing is that his helmet cam remained in tact to capture the terrifying fall from the top of some serious cliffs. Breathtaking landscapes turn to scary tumbles when Ager loses his balance, falling off the wrong side of [...]

Great Divide Ski Area chairlift derails

A chairlift at Great Divide Ski Area just outside of Helena derailed last weekend when a skier unloaded, causing 13 people to be evacuated by ski patrol.

No injuries resulted even though three people fell from the lift and two others jumped. The incident occurred at 9 p.m. during night skiing.

“It was certainly dramatic for us,” (Great [...]

Super sexy ski pants

Meet my friend Steph.

Steph has really awesome retro ski pants that used to belong to her mother.

The bright blue color means she’ll never get lost in a blizzard. The waist is so high that Steph has to roll them several times so they sit at her waist and the bottom zippers are located in the front. [...]

MT company fashions wood skis for the slopes

Flathead Beacon’s Molly Priddy writes about the new Whitefish-based ski business, Montana Ski Co., which sells handmade Montana wood skis.

The Missoulian ran the story in Sunday’s business section. I blogged about this company after the Indy profiled them back in November. It’s the first year the company is selling the skis and customers of all abilities [...]

Backcountry backpack with airbag decreases avalanche injuries, fatalities

I’m in the market for a backcountry ski backpack.

It just so happens my buddy, an avid snowmobiler, just bought one. Cost $1,000, he tells me.

For that price, it better be able to prevent avalanches and teleport me to the top of the mountain, I respond.

While it doesn’t prevent avalanches, it does help prevent against trauma for [...]

Seeking reviews of the Backcountry Access Tracker DTS avalanche beacon

Anyone who backcountry skis knows that it’s an expensive sport. Skiing alone costs a pretty penny for the newest high-performing gear, which, unfortunately, doesn’t keep its value well after a season. There’re ski tickets, season passes, helmets and goggles. Even the statement you’re trying to make with that solid gold or camo Burton jacket costs money, [...]

Buy local, ski local: Montana Ski Co.

The Indy wrote a story on Whitefish’s new ski business, Montana Ski Company. It’s the first year that skiers can purchase MT Ski Co.’s custom built skis, which the company lauds for its Montana timber wood cores. Other ski and snowboard businesses are popping up around Montana, all by relatively young ski enthusiasts, but Montana Ski [...]

The SOS fair, the annual ski swap to benefit local ski patrol, is Sunday, Nov. 7 at Big Sky High School in Missoula. It’s a great opportunity to get used winter and ski equipment at  reasonable prices.

Two-year-old Alexandre Wargniez sizes up his first pair of skis at the swap Saturday. His parents plan on teaching [...]
