Gelande, groomers and grinding!

Snowbowl’s Gelande weekend is almost always a great ski weekend, in part because most people don’t ski. Instead, they sit in the bar, suck down beers and watch guys huck the Gelande jump.

That leaves most of the mountain untrammeled, and that’s the way it was on Saturday. Even up top, on the Lavelle chair, there [...]

Gelande = Grand day

Snowbowl’s Gelande Championship is this weekend. Ski jumpers from all over will collide on Missoula’s local ski mountain for a chance to win an $8,000 cash purse.

For those who don’t know, gelande is ski jumping except with regular alpine gear. The event begins Saturday at noon. The finals are Sunday at noon. Admission is $3 [...]

Gust bust

Without wind, it’s hard to launch a kite. Most of the snow kiters who attended the 6th annual Snow Kite Rodeo this weekend at Georgetown Lake have come to terms with this reality, but when you’ve traveled upward of 8 hours to attend the event, it’s never easy to swallow.

Little wind at Mt Haggin on [...]

Putting the Lost in Lost Trail

OK, so we weren’t technically lost, but there were moments on Saturday where, in the search for untracked snow, I found myself a little turned around. Still, when you’re riding a bowl, down will get you out.

So, I’m here to tell you that despite the dearth of snow, there is still untracked powder hidden away [...]

6th annual Snow Kite Rodeo

Each year, the kite rodeo at Georgetown Lake is more radical than the last.  The skill level of the kiters participating improves as the event grows in popularity. People from all over the country, and even the world, collide on this small little Montana town for the long President’s Day weekend. For those who don’t [...]

Igloo Fever…sort of

Can’t decide what to do about the snow? We can’t either.
But, luckily the Missoulian’s Arthur Mouratidis knows what to do. He attempted to make an igloo. If you wanna see, and read about it, check out his slideshow here. Arthur says he’ll try again later. As for the rest of us, thanks for the inspiration.

Where’s winter?

Exactly one year ago this past weekend, my favorite ski partner and I were droppin’ ski runs that had received 14 and 16 inches of powder on back-to-back days at Brundage ski resort, which sits just up the road from McCall, Idaho. For many, the allure was McCall’s annual week-long Winter Carnival, which draws thousands [...]

Bowled Over

We hit the Bowl on Saturday and let me just say — argh! The groomers aren’t bad, hard-packed, but good and fast. That’s about the only good news. We hit Far East, Chicken Chute and the Meadows, and they were WAY sketchy. Crusty, gnarly bumps. Cloth-cutting, icy chunks. I suppose a warm day with some [...]
