Warren Miller Entertainment’s “…Like There’s No Tomorrow” showing Friday

It’s how we all should ski … and live, for that matter.

Like there’s no tomorrow.

The 62nd annual Warren Miller Entertainment film, “…Like There’s No Tomorrow,” will hit the big screen in Missoula on Friday, Feb. 3 at the Wilma Theatre. It’s narrated by Olympic Gold Medalist Jonny Moseley and shot on location on five continents.

UPDATE: Public comment open on MT Snowbowl’s expansion project

Here’s the story I wrote for today’s Missoulian on the release of the draft environmental impact statement for Snowbowl’s expansion plans. The expansion to the west of the resort on TV Mountain will nearly double the ski area’s size.

The Lolo National Forest hasn’t gotten the document uploaded to its website yet, but I should be getting [...]

Steamboat trademark says no Champagne Powder TM (snow) in Montana

The Missoulian received a “cease and desist” letter recently from Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation asking that the newspaper never use the term Champagne Powder TM (snow) in any story ever again because the ski resort trademarked the phrase. The term appeared recently in a Missoulian weather story.

(Pause for rolling of the eyes)

Does this sound familiar?

Remember [...]

Calling all people who like to drink beer and ski

This is soooo Missoula.

There’s sure to be some stiff competition at this relay race because if there are two things that folks in Missoula are good at it’s skiing and drinking.

It’s a team relay race that involves skiing, skinning/snowshoeing/xc skiing, snowboarding and drinking beer.

Faceplant,  no less. I’d be sure to face plant if guzzling Faceplant.

Ski and snowboard maintenance: Free wax and tune clinic this week

Tired of paying to have your skis tuned? Learn how to do it yourself!

Missoula REI is hosting a free clinic for skiers and snowboarders who want to learn how to wax and perform base repairs on alpine and Nordic skis and snowboards. The class is Thursday at the local retail store. Learn  how and why waxes [...]

Testing your avalanche equipment saves lives

I signed up for an avalanche I class this weekend. Not because I’m a huge backcountry skier, but I’d like to get into the backcountry more and figured that to go confidently and safely into unfamiliar territory, I had better learn about snow safety.

I’ve been acquiring the equipment over time. If you think skiing is expensive, [...]

Ride Montana Festival this weekend

Better start perfecting those terrain park moves because the 2nd annual Ride Montana Festival is only days away.

The best trick competition is scheduled for Saturday. The rail jam contest is Sunday. The park is open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day.

The event, which I wrote about earlier, is hosted by the Backwoods Project, a [...]

Pacific Northwest National Wife-Carrying Contest this Sunday at Lookout Pass

I love quirky stuff like this.

This Sun., Jan. 16, is the 2011 Winter Carnival at Lookout Pass, located 90 miles west of Missoula on Interstate-90.

Forget skiing! There’s going to be a snowman contest, scavenger hunts, face painting, balloon animals, 3-legged race (no skis!) and outside volleyball. I dig that.

Don’t forget special apperances by Captain Hot Chocolate, [...]

2nd Annual Ride Montana Festival Jan. 22 & 23

I covered the inaugural event last year and it was fun! Mark this on your calendar. The Backwoods Project is hosting a terrain park for the public’s enjoyment for two days only at the end of January.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate freestyle skiing, drink some beers, listen to music and hit some rails at Marshall Mountain.

Here’s [...]

MT athletes dominate men’s moguls race in U.S. selections event in Colorado

None of the four athletes from the Missoula Freestyle Ski Team who competed earlier this week in Steamboat Springs, Colo., earned spots on the U.S. Ski Team. But Montana athletes dominated the podium after Sunday’s men mogul competition.

Bradley Wilson, of Butte, took the gold and Cody Temple, of Missoula, took third place.

Also competing from Missoula included [...]
