Upcoming ski events and pictures from weekend Altoona Ridge avalanche class

I have so much new and exciting stuff to tell you all, I don’t know where to begin.

First, this Wednesday marks the beginning of the weekly alpine racing series at Snowbowl. If I don’t break my arm (which is absolutely a possibility) I’ll be excited to report back on Thursday about how it goes.

For those who [...]

Super sexy ski pants

Meet my friend Steph.

Steph has really awesome retro ski pants that used to belong to her mother.

The bright blue color means she’ll never get lost in a blizzard. The waist is so high that Steph has to roll them several times so they sit at her waist and the bottom zippers are located in the front. [...]

Whitefish Mountain Resort still serving really, really cheap beer

Professional skier Cody Townsend visited Whitefish Mountain Resort recently expecting to find a big corporate feel after the ski resort changed ownership in 2007. But instead, what he found is a lot of what locals in western Montana already know.

The long-lasting powder stashes remained, duct tape is still in fashion, the beards are still long [...]

The best ski music mix ever

I only take my iPod skiing when I head up the mountain solo, which hasn’t happened much lately. But when I do, music is essential. Forgetting my iPod is like forgetting my poles (which, ahem, has never happened). I understand that there are many who enjoy the sound of nature. I dig that, too. But sometimes [...]

Ski news roundup: tragic fatalities, chairlift derailment and major powder

There is a ton of snow sports news –  some good, some tragic.

A young Philipsburg man died on Tuesday after hitting a tree at Discovery Ski Area. The 20 something year old was an expert skier,  ski instructor, wearing a helmet and skiing  Claim Jumper, an intermediate run. It was his first run of the day, [...]

A report from Discovery Ski Area and optimistic for snow to celebrate New Year

I was home in Helena for the holidays, a place where good snow is sometimes hard to find.

Great Divide, Helena’s hometown mountain, is one of Montana’s treasured ma-and-pa ski hills in the quaint little town of Marysville a mere 30-minute drive from town. Growing up, my family occasionally skied there. In fact, I participated in the [...]

The story behind the story and an incredibly embarrassing double ejection

I wrote a story for the Missoulian’s outdoors page (comes out Thursday!) about Lookout Pass’ 75th anniversary season. It’s a look back at the ski area’s humble beginnings and a look forward at what is likely to be a dynamic future full of changes and expansion.

Looking down the mountain at the base of Lookout Pass [...]

Proceeds from Discovery ski tickets to benefit Max Wave

Let’s all ski and snowboard next Sunday in the name of surfing.

On Dec. 19, Discovery Ski Area, located near Georgetown Lake,  is donating $10 of every $38 adult lift ticket sold to The Max Wave. Lift tickets will be sold at the discounted price of $28 on Sunday.

The Max Wave is a Missoula organization that is [...]

Choosing between sunny, blue sky or powder day

I was greeted on Saturday by Wyatt, the college kid parking cars at the Snowbowl parking lot. He struck up a conversation while my friend and I loaded up our gear. Not only was he super friendly, but I loved that he still had white paint on his face from an African-themed party the night before, [...]

Snowbowl has busiest opening weekend ever

For those of us at Snowbowl this weekend, we know it was busy. But just how busy?

Well, according to Brad Morris, who co-owns the local, family run operation with his wife Ronnie, it was one of the busiest opening weekends he can remember.

I had friends say on Sunday that Saturday was way busier. But according to [...]
